    This is a prophetic witness from a heterosexual American Baptist pastor who has a remarkable understanding of the dignity and sanctity of gay and lesbian people. This is an excellent book for those new to the issues involved in the Bible and homosexuality.

    Boswell, John. Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1980.

    This Yale history professor offers a scholarly look at Christianity, social tolerance and homosexuality for the first 1500 years of the church. Careful exegesis of the traditional "texts of terror" affirm homosexuals in the church and their early holy unions while exposing those who condemn homosexuality as being misled by faulty translation and poor interpretation.

    This is an important work in the growing field of gay liberation theology with a critique of heterosexism in the Bible.

    A careful, current biblical scholarship relating to homosexual issues with historical-critical research. He is faithful to both scripture and scholarship with complex biblical material while showing how the Bible has been used to justify slavery, inquisitions, apartheid and the subjugation of women and homosexuals.

    Heyward, Carter. Touching Our Strength. The Erotic as Power and the Love of God. San Francisco:

    HarperCollins Publishers, 1984.

    This feminist and radical Episcopal priest and theologian dares to equate erotic power with the love of God.

    Horner, Tom. Jonathan Loved David: Homosexuality in Biblical Times. Philadelphia: The Westminster Press, 1978.

    This is a critical and respectful approach to Holy Scripture with a good biblical history of the practice of homosexuality. A valuable work with useful suggestions for further reading and a complete list of biblical references to homosexuality in a clearly written work.

    Johnston, Maury. Gays Under Grace. A Gay Christian’s Response to Homosexuality. Nashville:

    Winston-Derek Publishers, 1983.

    This book is an aggressive attack upon anti-gay ideology of "Falwellian" fundamentalism. It is also an objective, critical review of various life-styles among some gay Christians who tend to give credence to the extremist accusations that allgays are "immoral and perverted."

    McNeill, John J., S.J. The Church and the Homosexual. Kansas City, KS: Sheed & Ward, 1976.

    McNeill calls upon the Vatican to make a public act of repentance for its homophobia. Because he refused to give up his ministry to gay people, he was expelled as a Jesuit priest. He writes as a practicing psychotherapist and theologian.

    McNeill explains how both tradition and Scripture support the love between people of the same sex and shows that a positively gay identity is compatible with Christian faith.

    This evangelical, lesbian feminist provides a careful theological and social analysis empowering, welcoming and honoring all orientations towards spiritual and sexual wholeness.

    Sexuality is the expression of one’s total self as male and female. This is a study in theological ethics exploring both traditional and unconventional sexuality issues within the context of God’s fulfilling grace.

    A frank and revealing autobiography of the founder of the Universal Fellowship of the Metropolitan Community Church.
