An Earthquake, a Labyrinth and a Broken Menorah

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake…" Psalm 46:1-2a NRSV
Ash Wednesday 2001 began as just another day. At the church, my car began jerking and shaking while at a full standstill. My friend and I realized it was an earthquake and we bolted from the car. We staggered and swayed like drunks. Two others sprinted from the church building as the ground continued to tremble under our feet. Fear was in all our eyes. Just as suddenly as it had started, the quake stopped. We hugged in relief before pulling out cell phones to call loved ones, eager to go home and check for any damage.
This particular church had an unfinished outdoor labyrinth and I needed to feel God’s gracious presence before doing anything. The earth that had so vigorously moved during the earthquake now felt sturdy and safe. While lingering in center of the labyrinth, I began praying for everyone affected by the quake.
Upon arriving home, books were scattered everywhere. My cherished brass menorah had broken. Hundreds of people had been injured miles closer to the quake’s epicenter. A number of buildings had collapsed. Some roads had suffered damage. Yes, there were homes destroyed. But we had been spared catastrophic loss of life.
Since the quake, I now pray for less fortunate earthquake victims around the world. My broken menorah reminds me of what could have been. And I remember God is a very present help in trouble.
Prayer: For earthquake victims around the world.
Thought for the day: God is our refuge and strength in times of need.
