To Zimbabwe with Love
All Shall Be Well
"We know that all things work together for good for those who love God,
who are called
according to His purpose." Romans 8:28
Whatever the New Year brings you and your loved ones, I want you to remember that “all shall be well.” As a constant reminder, memorize Romans 8:28. If this is the only verse in the entire Bible that you commit to memory, you will find it sufficient for your needs. “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”
These words offer a comforting perspective in prosperity and adversity, in joy and happiness, and in sorrow and suffering. This is every saint’s assurance for living and dying. When overwhelmed with troubles as you fight with the demons of discouragement, meditate on Romans 8:28. In doing so, you will find divine solace and strength for every moment in every situation. These holy musings will keep you alert to God’s many blessings in disguise, and your heart will overflow with gratitude in response to divine providence. Many saints throughout history learned this practical lesson of spiritual confidence. Consider the examples of Julian of Norwich and St. Francis de Sales. Julian, a contemplative joyous mystic and great teacher in the church (1342–1420), offers timeless assurance through this simple comment: “All shall be well and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.”
St. Francis de Sales, a revered French Catholic theologian (1567–1622) also understood this basic truth as he tirelessly exhorted listeners to have the utmost confidence in God’s profound love for humanity. De Sales wrote this wonderful prayer as a result of his personal faith in divine providence: “…The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either he will shield you from suffering, or he will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.”
For a profound New Year’s resolution, follow your highest calling. Love and trust God more deeply with every day. You will discover all things do work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to God’s purposes. With each day, your love and faith will encourage and inspire others to live another day. You will be a source of blessing for many.
Prayer: Faithful, loving and everlasting God—I entrust myself into your daily care for this New Year. Deepen my love. Help me remember “all shall be well.” Bless me with divine peace for throughout 2003. May I be a blessing for many. Amen.
