To Zimbabwe with Love

Blessed, fortunate, happy

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:3

When life is difficult, do not fret. Rather, be blessed. Come to Jesus for strength through his famous and beloved teachings, known as the Beatitudes. These inspired words are found in his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-12). Through these remarkable insights, you will find joy and happiness even in persecution and tribulation. As you find your place in them, you will consider yourself among the happiest and most fortunate of people. You will experience God's blessing and this, my friends, is your greatest wealth.

The Beatitudes offer us blessed attitudes. These attitudes strengthen our faith, encourage us in difficulties, and help us rejoice in the midst of suffering and despair, through their simple yet profound message of faith, hope and love. They bless us while we struggle with doubts, trials and privation. One does not need to be a Christian to feel their divine power and encouragement. These blessed attitudes help us find true joy, even a sense of purpose and mission, while in the mess and uncertainties of life.

The first and perhaps least understood Beatitude/attitude is for the poor in spirit, those who understand what it means to feel broken and needy. This attitude of inner poverty and humility keenly reminds us of our complete dependency upon God. Such a blessing is priceless, for when we feel spiritually impoverished; Jesus promises us the kingdom of heaven.

Rejoice and be glad, for God's kingdom is for the humble in heart. Blessed are the poor in spirit, when facing disappointment, disillusionment and despair. Blessed are you when your strength and abilities are completely powerless and inadequate, for the kingdom of heaven is powerfully at work within you.

When at our lowest, we are most blessed. Whether young or old, sick or healthy, hungry or full, in safety or in danger, God's special blessing will always be for the poor in spirit.

Prayer: Truly, God, you are very great and Jesus is very wise. Teach us through the power of your Holy Spirit, what it means to be poor in spirit. Now help us pray for the people of Zimbabwe with a humble heart. Amen.
